Off the margins started in 2016 as an idea for a pop up display to raise money for New Yorks unhoused population. This idea blossomed to a pop up art gallery show for unhoused artist in 2019, raising $4k on kickstarter in two weeks.
Since its inception Off the margins projects have evolved from gallery shows to annual fundraising projects for social change, awareness and supplies. To date this project has raised $10k. Follow on Instagram
School Supplies
Adoptaclassroom.org fundraiser
Money Raised:
Living with two teachers for two years during the pandemic had been an eye opening experience into teachers sacrifice, and resilience. Dealing with remote learning, parent outreach, kids falling behind. Coincidentally in the same period Quinta Brunson’s first show Abbott Elementary debuted and showed a lot of the things teachers experience in an out of the classroom at the hands of a failed school system and poor funding. I designed these shirts to raise awareness about the things teachers go through and how they’re historically underfunded and under supported. 100% of proceeds of the shirts were donated to adoptaclassroom.org. The fundraiser only lasted 4 days after receiving a cease and desist from Shopify even though Quinta was a purchaser of the shirts. Make sure to check out the show streaming on Hulu.
Why we protest
Breonna Taylor/George Floyd fundraiser
Money Raised:
In the midst of the countless killings of black people namely George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, I wanted to raise money to support grassroots organizations fighting for change. This shirt emphasizes the effectiveness of protest, public action and social media presence. In a time where systemic racism and unjust state actors seem insurmountable protest proved to be a major stepping stone in a longer journey. Money was raised for the non profit "Until Freedom". The organization was co-founded by activist Tamika Mallory. It serves as an intersectional social justice organization and a clearing house for organizers, activists, movement attorneys, artists, celebrities, and formerly incarcerated individuals.
Goliath Gallery show
Pop up art gallery for NY unhoused artist
Money Raised:
Goliath was the first ever Off the Margins event. It was nicknamed after an unhoused artist I befriended outside my graduate studio. A true talent but someone who like many others had succumbed to the inequalities of NYC shelter living and unfortunate life events. Partnering with the Bowery Mission- an NYC institution for the unhoused, Off the Margins showcased 50 artworks by currently and previously unhoused individuals. The show was a success selling out 70% of the artwork with 100% of proceeds going to the Bowery Mission. This initial project started as a kickstarter campaign raising $4k in two weeks to supplies and rental for the gallery. The back of the shirt illustrates each infrastructure, societal and legislative change to come about as a result of protest.
